Blue Rivers Area Agency on Aging Celebrating Older Americans Month

Older Americans Month 2018: Engage at Every Age

The public is invited to join Blue Rivers Area Agency on Aging (Blue Rivers AAA) in celebration of Older Americans Month (OAM) during the month of May.

Across the country, older Americans – a rapidly growing population – are taking part in activities that promote wellness and social connection. They are sharing their wisdom and experience with future generations, and they are giving back to make enrich their communities. They’re working and volunteering, mentoring and learning, leading and engaging.

For 55 years, Older Americans Month (OAM) has been observed to recognize older Americans and their contributions to our communities. Led by the Administration for Community Living’s Administration on Aging, every May offers opportunity to hear from, support, and celebrate our nation’s elders. This year’s OAM theme, “Engage at Every Age,” emphasizes the importance of being active and involved, no matter where or when you are in life. You are never too old (or too young) to participate in activities that can enrich your physical, mental, and emotion well-being.

Blue Rivers AAA, serving Gage, Jefferson, Johnson, Nemaha, Otoe, Pawnee, Richardson and Thayer counties in Nebraska will be celebrating the month at our senior centers and administrative office.

On Thursday, May 17, Blue Rivers AAA will host an Open House, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at our administrative office, 103 Eastside Blvd, Beatrice. Presentations for the day include: What is Stepping On? at 9 a.m. – learn how this evidence-based results-proven class can help you discover ways to reduce your chances of falling; Preventing Senior Fraud: The Nebraska Senior Anti-Fraud Education (SAFE) Program, at 10:30 a.m. – learn find out how to protect yourself and your family, in a presentation by Ryan Sothan, Consumer Protection Division, Nebraska State Attorney General’s Office; and Five Wishes at a Lunch and Learn scheduled for 12:15 p.m. – bring your lunch (or call by May 15 and we’ll have a sandwich for you) and listen to Dr. Michael Havekost, Beatrice Community Hospital about the five things you want your family to know and the five things your family needs to know.
